Job Description

As an Associate, you will be responsible for conducting fundamental investment research, assisting in building recommendations, implementing fundamental investments strategies, and monitoring and managing portfolio investments. You may also support the identification, scoping, and implementation of value creation opportunities by conducting research, analysis, and preparing presentations.

Team Description

The successful candidate will join the European Real Estate (RE Europe) team, part of the Real Assets group. Based in London, the team is responsible for equity investments across a C$9 billion European portfolio and a global platform of C$49 billion. The RE Europe team invests with high-quality JV partners and in funds and platforms across sectors including housing, logistics and data centres, pursuing thematic investments to drive compelling risk-adjusted returns at scale.

Accountabilities:

  • Compile industry, market and asset level data and financial information to support research
  • Build and leverage relationships with industry participants and management teams
  • Perform fundamental research and present research ideas to broader group
  • Perform due diligence on opportunities, including financial, company and sector diligence, to determine investment merits and risks
  • Manage coordination of due diligence processes, including engaging with external advisors and internal teams
  • Develop company financial models and perform valuation analyses; apply statistical analysis to support investment decisions
  • Drive underwriting of real estate investments, independently building and maintaining complex financial models to analyse real estate investment opportunities, ensuring model accuracy and assumptions are robust
  • Participate in evaluation, including sharing views on overall investment attractiveness based on findings from diligence work
  • Prepare analytical investment reviews and recommendations in collaboration with the team, including industry overviews, written investment rationales and due diligence reviews
  • Participate in presentation of investment recommendations to the Investment Committee and Board as required
  • Assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of existing portfolios, including capital commitments and distributions
  • Support transition of new assets into CPPIB portfolio by identifying benchmarks, building financial models and providing rigorous project management support
  • Take a lead role in coordinating with internal departments (e.g., Finance & Operations) to support investment management

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in relevant field
  • An advanced degree or certification (CFA) is an asset
  • Commensurate relevant work experience
  • Strong research, analytical, financial modeling, valuation, problem solving skills and ability to think creatively
  • Experience working in deal environments including supporting acquisitions, diligence and/or asset management activities, with a demonstrated focus on real estate
  • Advanced computer/technical skills – MS Excel, MS PowerPoint
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with an ability to communicate effectively across all levels and with external partners
  • European language skills and/or prior work experience in key Continental European markets is an asset
